Centella asiatica is a herbaceous and perennial herb from the Apiaceae family.
It is distributed in Asia, Pacific countries, Africa and America. It is commonly
known as ‘Gotu kola’. It is also called ‘tiger grass’ as tigers roll on the Centella
asiatica plant to heal their wounds.
It has been known as the ‘miraculous elixir of life’ in Chinese traditional medicine for
over 2000 years. Because elephants, known for their longevity eat the plant Centella Asiatica, it has been noted that Sri Lankans include it in their dietary routines to prolong their lifespan. In Indian Ayurvedic medicine, it is also used in the treatment of skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema, in the healing ofwounds and burns,
and in the treatment of varicose and ulcers.
